BUCKFIELD — Town Manager Dana Lee recommended to selectmen Tuesday night that the town not pursue action against a resident who had trees cut on the old railroad bed that belongs to the town.

State Forest Ranger Brad Bucknell investigated the incident. According to Lee’s report, there were 35 freshly cut stumps on the town property and the value of the timber was estimated at about $2,000. After examining the deed of the abutter who had the trees cut, the district attorney declined to press criminal charges.

Lee had recently inspected the railroad bed with Fire Chief Tim Brooks, who said that there was adequate clearance for emergency vehicles without cutting any trees. The abutter’s deed clearly gives the authority to maintain access to the property and the abutter felt that the trees needed to be removed.

In other business, Selectmen Robin Buswell and Martha Catevenis reminded voters that there will be a special election from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on January 23 in the Town Office to fill the vacancy created by the death of Selectman Rodney Allen. There are two candidates for the seat, Warren Wright and William Sullivan Jr.

The town’s billing agent will send out one more letter demanding payment for services rendered by the Buckfield Rescue Department to 15 residents who have failed to pay their bill. Any accounts that are not paid in response to this letter will be turned over to a collection agency. There are 15 accounts amounting to about $9,000 that may be given to the agency.

The town rejected the bids for their Kodiak truck. The town had decided to sell the truck rather than making needed repairs. Since the bids were so low, they decided to keep the truck. Lee is looking into equipping a town plow truck with a standard dump body for summer use. He believes this will be cost effective.

Resident Judy Berg told selectmen that there will be a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 16, in the RSU 10 Central Office, behind the athletic field next to the Dixfield High School, at 6 p.m.to discuss withdrawing from the RSU. The public is invited to attend this meeting.
