GREENWOOD — Continuing its commitment to environmental sustainability, Mount Abram ski area installed two charging stations last month for electric and hybrid cars.
The ski area is trying to reduce its use of fossil fuels while also rewarding guests that drive such cars, Jamie Schectman, marketing, communications and community engagement director, said Tuesday afternoon.
“We’re doing our part to get off fossil fuels,” he said.
Matt Hancock, Mount Abram’s owner and operator, drives an electric car, Schectman said.
“If more desirable destinations assumed a leadership role of protecting the planet, no one would ever need to drive a fossil fuel vehicle,” Hancock said Friday in a news release.
Demand for the two 220-volt charging centers installed the last week of December next to the ticket office is so high that online reservations are now required to plug in and charge vehicles, Schectman said.
Stevens Pass in Washington state and Mount Abram are the only ski areas in the nation to install electric vehicle charging stations, Schectman said. Mt. Abram also intends to install solar panels on two acres this summer.
“We’re cutting edge here in Western Maine,” Schectman said.
