100 years ago, 1913
A fire in a closet on the third floor of the McGillicuddy Block, Lisbon and Ash streets, was extinguished by the Lewiston Department early Thursday morning after it obtained dangerous headway. Had it started a few hours earlier it is believed that the block would have been seriously damaged. The blaze worked its way into the fourth story but was stopped there. Smoke damaged the dressmaking rooms of Mrs. Napoleon Provencher, and water caused a heavy damage at the Murphy hat and fur store on the street floor.

50 years ago, 1963
The bright sun, with a multi-colored ring around it, failed to provide much warmth in the Twin Cities yesterday. Actually, the ring, which appeared about 8 a.m., was a “sun dog” made up of colored spots. Although quite common for this time of year, except for the colors, the ring has no effect on the weather.

25 years ago, 1988
Striking paper workers in an estimated 30-car “Car-a-Van” quickly broke off into groups this morning and started spreading the word about their latest tactic in their fight against International Paper Co., a letter-writing campaign to IP board members. The union members dispersed to the Auburn Mall, the Promenade Mall, the Marketplace Mall, the Roak Mall and the Taylor Brook Mall. They passed out leaflets that ask the recipients to write letters to the companies which they claim have connections with IP.
