JAY – The U.S. Postal Service will hold a meeting Wednesday at the Jay post office on Main Street to discuss a proposal to reduce hours there.

The meeting will be held in the lobby at 4 p.m. Jan. 23.

The Postal Service proposes to reduce hours from eight to six on weekdays. The current hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., according to the Postal Service Web page.

In 2012, Postal Service representatives proposed to reduce hours at more than 90 post offices in Maine to try to run their operations more efficiently. Thousands of post offices around the country are going through the same process or have already reduced their hours.

Representatives sent out surveys to Jay Post Office customers prior to Wednesday’s meeting that asked what customers would prefer, including the realignment of post office hours or closing the post office.
