BANGOR — One of the most decorated musicians — as part of a multiplatinum band that ruled the late 1970s and early 1980s, and as a solo act, songwriter or producer since then — is bringing the encore portion of his successful Back to Bass concert tour to Bangor.

Gordon Sumner — better known internationally as Sting, the former lead singer and songwriter of the British supergroup The Police — has extended his 2011-12 world tour with more stops in North America and Europe, beginning in late May.

Sting will perform many of his greatest hits from his days in The Police and as a solo artist — stripped down — with a five-piece band in Bangor on Thursday, June 20. Tickets go on sale at noon Friday, Feb. 1.

“Sting for us is a huge coup. The hottest ticket in the business four years ago was The Police when they had their reunion tour,” said Alex Gray, an Old Town native and Waterfront Concerts promoter. “And for us too this is a big deal because it’s along the lines of a big name in terms of iconic status.”

Sting, who got his nickname from a black-and-yellow sweater he wore at many of his performances during his early days as a musician, was born in Newcastle, England, in 1951. He formed The Police with drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Henri Padovani in 1977, but Andy Summers replaced Padovani in 1978.

Together, the trio produced five studio albums and six top 10 Billboard singles — one of which (“Every Breath You Take”) was No. 1 for eight weeks — and won six Grammy Awards over a seven-year period (1978-1984)

Since the breakup of The Police, Sting has put out 10 studio albums — three of which were triple-platinum (Recording Industry Association of America-certified sales in excess of 3 million), one double-platinum, and three others platinum. Five of his singles have peaked in the Billboard Top 10 and five others were in the Top 20.

His biggest-selling album was 1999’s “Brand New Day,” but while it peaked at No. 9 on U.S. album charts, two others fared better in popularity at No. 2. Those were his solo debut “The Dream of the Blue Turtles” in 1985 and “The Soul Cages” in 1991. His most popular single was “All For Love,” a collaboration with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart. The single from the movie soundtrack to “The Three Musketeers” went all the way to No. 1 in 1993.

“We still haven’t had a major hip-hop show in Bangor yet, and we haven’t been super successful in tweener music like Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift, or even adult contemporary, which is huge in this market, even though we had Jason Mraz our first year,” said Gray. “So we’re always trying to broaden our musical offerings across the board.”
