JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Alice M. Bernier, 98, of Jacksonville, N.C., formerly of Lewiston and Brunswick passed away on Sunday, Jan. 27, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Lewiston, June 9, 1914, a daughter of the late Anselm and Andelina (Lacasse) Ouellette. She attended St. Peter’s Elementary School.

On June 1, 1940, she married the love of her life, Lucien Bernier, and together they worked and raised their young family in Lewiston. Lucien passed away on May 11, 1983, as the result of a car accident they were involved in which she also suffered very serious injuries.

In spite of her loss and pain, she persevered through her great personal strength to move on in her life. She was a very hard worker who worked in the shoe industry as a stitcher for most of her working life.

When she lived in Lewiston, she was a member of Holy Cross Parish, The Ladies of Holy Cross and The Holy Cross Senior Citizens. In her spare time, she enjoyed working on cross-word puzzles and knitting.

Alice is survived by her two sons, Gerald L. Bernier and his wife, Rachel, of Brunswick and Richard E. Bernier of North Carolina; one daughter, Joan Benoit and her husband, Charles, of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters, Margaret Latulippe, Jeanne Desrocher and Rita Latulippe.
