100 years ago, 1913
The session of the Maine Legislature’s committee on labor this afternoon at Augusta was enlivened by several wordy tilts between William D. Pennell, agent of the Hill cotton mill at Lewiston, and Thomas J. Regan of Lowell, Mass., and Irving Fleming of Holyoke, Mass., representing the United Textile Workers of the country. Mr. Pennell did not mince matters in his characterization of labor leaders and so-called agitators and what started out to be a dull hearing developed into one of the liveliest of the present Legislature. Various cotton, shoe and woolen manufacturers frem all sections of the State were represented.

50 years ago, 1963
A sewage facility with a treatment plant to meet anticipated classification of the Androscoggin River, plus a complete storm sewer system, would cost the town of Lisbon about $1,225,000, according to a survey made by a Portland firm, town officials revealed Wednesday. This would raise the tax rate $2.92 per thousand dollars of valuation, it was said.

25 years ago, 1988
Michael Earle of Bangor smiled as the wind began to whip across Lake Sabattus shortly before the start of the North American Open Ice-Snow Sailing Championship this morning. “You get a heck of a lot more speed than in wind surfing,” he said, attaching a ski rigging to his summer surfing outfit. “And that’s what we’re here for.” Robert Brotherus, a native of Finland who brought the event to Sabattus, predicted winds would blow hard enough to push surfers across the ice at up to 50 miles per hour. “There could be up to 4,000 (spectators) here,” said John Gayton of Sabattus, co-sponsor of races with Gerard Roy.
