Gun show at Elks Lodge

LEWISTON — Lewiston Elks Lodge 371 will host a gun show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Lodge, 1675 Lisbon Road.

The event is open to the public and admission is $5 per person, free under 16. More than 1,000 are expected to attend, and there will be gun dealers from all over New England coming to represent their companies and show off their products.

Representatives from the Maine National Rifle Association will be available at the event to answer any questions.

Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase.

Gift of $12,000 to benefit women

LEWISTON — The Maine Community Foundation, through its Androscoggin Fund along with The People of Color Fund, donated $12,000 towards a local women’s empowerment project. The community self-help classes for adult women are coordinated through a Lewiston nonprofit at 450 Lisbon St. called The Somali Bantu Community Mutual Association of Lewiston/Auburn.

Under the terms of the grant, sets of women convene weekly in several locations around L/A for such valuable lessons as spoken English, basic math, computer literacy, citizenship and household budgeting. These regular meetings enable members to provide mutual assistance as they struggle, in a new setting, to overcome a long history of gender and ethnicity-based disadvantage.

CLT needs votes for $5k grant

LEWISTON — Last year, CLT was proud to receive enough votes to win $1000 from Bangor Savings Bank Community Matters More program. This year organizers hope to win $5000 and need the public’s help.

Voting is simple: Navigate to www.bangor.com/Why-Bangor-Savings/Supporting-Our-Communities/Voting.aspx, scroll down to Greater Portland/Lewiston/Auburn, write in “L/A Community Little Theatre” and submit. Voting ends March 11.

A total of 68 grants will be awarded, including the organizations listed on the ballot and to the top 20 write-in vote recipients (at least two write-ins per region). The top vote-getting organizations in each region, including write-ins, will each receive $5,000. The remaining 60 organizations will each receive $1,000.

Valentine’s dance at Legion hall

MECHANIC FALLS — A Valentine’s dance featuring Cold Blue Steel will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Mechanic Falls American Legion Post 150.

Cost is $5 per person. Social hour with snacks included will begin at 7.

Country Music Valentines Show

MECHANIC FALLS — The Down East Country Music Association will hold their annual Valentines Show on Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Silver Spur, Route 121. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Show runs from noon to 5 p.m.

Admission for the afternoon is $5 for adults, $6 for nonmembers, $2 for children under 12 years.

Entertainment for the afternoon will be performed by the musicians and performing award winners who are Tennessee-bound in March for national competitions in Pigeon Forge.

There will be food concession, a 50/50 drawing and raffle drawings.

Food safety certification

TURNER — MSAD 52 Adult & Community Education is offering a nationally accredited food safety certification program designed for food service managers, directors, chefs, kitchen managers, dietitians, dietary managers and food service staff. Topics include food handling, HAACP, pest control and more.

The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, and Thursday, Feb. 21. The course fee of $160 includes textbook and exam.

Speaker’s topic: Arlington

NEW GLOUCESTER — Alan Gregory, U.S. Navy and U.S. Army, retired, and a former member of the American Battle Monuments Commission, will speak about Arlington National Cemetery at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, next to the Town Hall on Route 231.

Gregory will talk about Arlington as a national shrine, connections to Maine and his personal assignments there. Open to the public and free of charge. Refreshments will be served.

Zumbatomic to start Feb. 28

TURNER — Zumbatomic classes will start on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Turner Primary School. The program is a rocking, high-energy fitness party designed for kids ages 4 to 12. Zumbatomic helps kids increase self-focus, confidence, coordination and boosts metabolism.

Class is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is $30 per session. Another session will take place in April.

‘Gatsby’ is next club book

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Public Library’s Saturday morning book club has announced its next selection: “The Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The next meeting of the club will take place on Saturday, March 2, at 10:15 a.m. in the Library’s Couture Room

Grange offers $200 scholarship
