100 years ago, 1913
Joe Dignard’s deductions regarding the Auburn panther case were knocked in the head yesterday morning when the puma instead of denning up on Streaked Mountain put in his appearance in the vicinity of North Auburn. Several reliable persons saw the beast and Frank Bailey fired three long-range shots at the animal, but does not believe any of the shots found the mark. The Bailey family got a fine view of the panther or the what-it-is-is-it. He trotted up through the Charles Skillings field. “Gramp” Morse of Lewiston was called into the hunt. He and Mr. Bailey did find the remains of a coon which the animal had caught and partially devoured.

50 years ago, 1963
Plans to construct a $75,000 nursing home-convalescent center were announced in Lewiston yesterday. The home, being constructed at the intersection of Montello, Fair and College Streets in Lewiston, across from the Sons of Italy Hall, will be built by Pleasant Homes, Inc. A corporation, made up of professional and business men, has been planning the building for the past one and one half years. The building will provide facilities for 654 to 70 beds, located in private rooms, semi-private rooms and wards.

25 years ago, 1988
Sabattus Sanitary District trustees last night agreed to study the possibility of disconnecting the sewer lines of users who do not pay their bills. Trustee Leslie Cosgrove, district spokeswoman, said this morning that user bills more than one year past due total “between $30,00 and $50,000,” a significant portion of the district’s $176,000 annual budget. Uncollected fees have been a problem for the district since its inception, and played a part in the financial crisis it faced last year. The district was in danger of defaulting on a major loan.
