1926 – 2013
PORTLAND — Mary “Mollie” Agnes Folan, 86, died Feb. 9, peacefully at home with her children by her side.
She was born Sept. 6, 1926, in Castlesampson, County Roscommon, Ireland. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Kilroy Mannion.
At 19, Mollie moved to London, England, where she met and married Thomas Folan in 1950. While in England, they had two children before immigrating to the United States through Boston, and settled in Portland in 1957.
Mollie raised six children while working on the pediatrics unit (now known as the Barbara Bush Center) at Maine Medical Center for 30 years. She was a very caring, giving person who never complained.
She is survived by son, Martin Folan, Portland; daughters, Barbara and Dr. John Kneeland of Rhode Island, Mary Theresa and Dr. Alan Rich of New Gloucester, AnneMarie Folan of Portland, Patricia and Bill Densmore of Portland, and Karen Folan of New Gloucester; brothers, Gerald of England, and Martin, Michael and Thomas, all of Ireland; sister, Theresa of Australia; grandchildren Amy Folan, Patricia Collins, Keeley Folan, William Rowe, Bryan and Christie Kneeland, Samuel, Molly, and Thomas Rich, Fiona, Maura, Liam, and Siobhan Densmore; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Collins, Kathleen Mears, Meadow Rowe and Anelio Russo; several nieces and nephews in England, Ireland and Australia; and four special nieces and nephews that live in South Portland, Sarah, Maureen, Joe, and Kevin Folan, who held a very special place in her heart.
Mollie was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary Kilroy Mannion; husband, Thomas Folan; sisters, Nancy and Lena; and brothers, Paddy, John, James, Joseph and Anthony.
A heartfelt thanks goes out to Lisa, Samantha, Patty, Joe, Laura, Gregory, Lorna and Cathy for their extraordinary care and compassion over the last several years.
