The selectmen in the town of Peru have failed, and still fail, to follow the wishes of the voters by not having Kathy Hussey choose a job — either holding her position as a selectman and resigning as secretary, or vice versa.
The chairman and vice-chair of the board, by not voting to do so, have caused a lot of controversy and anger, which keeps being fueled with Hussey still holding two positions.
The chairman of the board submitted the political activity ordinance and is failing to enforce it, a document that was officially voted and ratified by the voters.
It is the selectmen’s obligation to take that decision and move forward. However, that didn’t happen.
Many citizens are fed up and feel that they need to make it happen, since the board won’t. Recall petitions against all five selectmen were circulated and submitted to give the citizens the power to enforce that political activity ordinance.
It is a shame that a few people feel they don’t have to follow the rules and feel they can do whatever they want, regardless of the wants of the citizens who elected them.
The upcoming recall vote on March 4 provides the means and method by which the citizens may retain control over elected officials who aren’t representing the best interests of the community, are unresponsive or incompetent.
A vote is a precious right we have as American citizens and not voting for the issue is a waste of that precious gift. Residents should vote and take control of their government.
