Schooner Fare duo, brothers Steve and Chuck Romanoff, will perform at the 35th Schooner Fare/Devonsquare reunion concert Sunday, Feb. 24 in Scarborough.

McPhillips organized the first three concerts as a way to see his two favorite groups at the same time. With his untimely passing in 1980, the Jack McPhillips Memorial Fund was formed to continue his mission of good fun and humanitarianism on a local level.

The annual concert scheduled for The Landing at Pine Point, has since grown to include a crop of talent from the next generation. Dave Rowe, son of Schooner Fare’s late bass player, Tom Rowe, will join singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Don Campbell, who tours nationally with his band, for a musical retelling of the musicians’ collective histories.

Campbell’s father took him to listen to Schooner Fare at the Holy Mackeral on Portland’s waterfront when he was a youngster. Years later, Devonsquare alumnus Tom Dyhrberg dragged Campbell to a reunion rehearsal. He sang a few harmony parts, and the rest is history.

Asked about the memorial fund, Dyhrberg said, “We give a great show every year, then give the money away to deserving people in southern Maine who fall through the cracks of eligibility for other charities.”

The annual reunion concert also serves to remember and honor the contributions of fellow musicians who have died by sharing their songs and spirit with friends and fans.
