LEWISTON — MIT won its third team title in four years, taking away the throne from host Bates, at the 2013 New England Division III Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championships at Walter Slovenski Track on Saturday.
Bates senior David Pless set meet records in both the weight throw (64-7¾) and the shot put (59-9½), after pulling off the same feat at the Maine State Championships two weeks ago.
Meet records were also set in the distance medley by Bowdoin, and in three events that have only been contested since last season: the 60-meter dash (Dom Kone, Colby), the 60 hurdles (Adam Scalesse, Coast Guard) and the heptathlon (Michael Blair, Tufts).
McFetters shines for Maine
ORONO — Robyn McFetters smashed the school record in the weight throw to lead the University of Maine women’s track and field team against New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.
McFetters threw 55-10.50, beating the previous mark of 55-00.00 set by Rebecca Even in 2009. Jaclyn Masters of Auburn notched the second-best pole vault in school history with 12-01.50, which qualifies for the ECAC Championships and won the event. Ashten Hackett of Auburn won the triple jump with a mark of 35-10.75.
Men’s basketball
Husson 81, Lyndon State 76
LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Marc Zaharchuk and Eric Modica led a balanced Eagle attack with 14 points each as Husson University held off a late Lyndon surge for an 81-76 triumph in NAC men’s basketball action Saturday.
The Eagles (17-8) led 49-37 at halftime, only to see the Hornets (12-13) come roaring back to trail by one point in the final minute of play.
A pair of Jason Gray jumpers in the final 60 seconds fell short of their mark, preventing Lyndon State a come-from-behind victory.
Eric Cottonham tallied 12 points off the bench for Husson University.
Williams 88, Bates 79
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A 10-point scoring outburst by Williams junior forward Taylor Epley early in the second half boosted the second-seeded Ephs to an 88-79 victory over Bates College in NESCAC Tournament quarterfinals Saturday.
The Bobcats (10-15) had four players in double figures with Mike Boornazian leading with 20, Graham Safford and Ed Bogdanovich each netting 16 and Mark Brust adding 11 points.
With 17:30 left in the second half, Epley ignited the Ephs’ (23-3) attack when he tallied 10 straight points in just over two minutes.
Tufts 82, Bowdoin 71
MEDFORD, Mass. — The Tufts men’s basketball team out-scored Bowdoin 21-4 over the final eight minutes to earn an 82-71 victory over the Polar Bears in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC championship on Saturday.
The Polar Bears (14-10) produced a 14-2 run in the second half to turn a 56-50 deficit into a 68-58 lead after a pair of free throws by sophomore Bryan Hurley with 9:52 on the clock.
Sophomore Ben Ferris, who scored six points during the late Jumbo run, led all scorers with 24 to go with nine rebounds.
Amherst 83, Colby 52
AMHERST, Mass. — The eighth-seeded Colby College men’s basketball team stayed with top-seeded Amherst for a little over 10 minutes Saturday, but the nationally second-ranked Lord Jeffs were too much in taking an 83-52 win in the NESCAC quarterfinal game.
Colby first-year center Chris Hudnut had a team-high 21 points and led the Mules (7-17) this year in scoring average at 12.9 points per contest.
Colby had one lead in the game after Hudnut nailed a 3-point shot early in the first half for a 7-5 lead.
UMass-Dartmouth 82,USM 74
GORHAM — Freshman forward Wale Abraham scored a game-high 20 points to lead the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth to a 82-74 victory over the University of Southern Maine in LEC men’s basketball action Saturday.
With the game tied 67-67 with 6:39 remaining, Abraham hit two jumpers and made a layup to highlight Dartmouth’s 12-3 run, giving them a commanding 79-70 lead with 1:11 to play.
The Huskies (14-11) cut the Corsairs (5-20) led to 79-74 on a layup from senior guard Mike Poulin of Readfield and a jumper from junior forward James Odneal. But, just 33 seconds remaining proved to be fatal for Southern Maine.
Johnson State 71, Maine Maritime 70
JOHNSON, Vt. — A last second block by Johnson State secured a 71-70 win over Maine Maritime in an NAC men’s basketball game Saturday.
The Mariners (4-20) held a 65-58 lead with six minutes left in the game before an 8-0 run gave the Badgers (9-16) a 66-65 lead with three minutes left.
Johnson State scored five unanswered points to lead 71-65 before scores by Andy Ball and Jason Hatch got the Mariners to within one. Ball had a chance to win the game with seconds left, but Cody Camisa got a piece of his shot to end the game.
Logan Poirier paced the Mariners (4-20) with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Curry 73, Wentworth 61
MILTON, Mass. — Senior Sedale Jones scored a game-high 23 points to lead Curry College past Wentworth 73-61 in CCC men’s basketball action Saturday.
The Colonels (18-7) took their biggest lead of the game, 63-48, after junior Lambros Papalambros converted a layup with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
With 3:53 on the clock, Wentworth senior Corey Theriault of Auburn sank a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 63-55. That was as close as the Leopards (15-10) would come as Curry maintained a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game.
Women’s basketball
Bowdoin 60, Tufts 54
Medford, Mass. — The eighth-seeded Bowdoin College women’s basketball team upset top-seeded Tufts University, 60-54, in the NESCAC Championship Quaterfinals on Saturday.
First-year Selena Lorrey finished with a team-high 11 points for Bowdoin, shooting 4-for-8 from the field and 3-of-7 from three-point territory. Sophomore Sara Binkhorst added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Bowdoin led 29-25 at halftime as Lorrey scored eight points off the bench, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Kaitlin Donahoe was pivotal with a pair of late threes for the Polar Bears.
USM 86, UMass-Dartmouth 50
GORHAM — Senior guard Haley Jordan scored a season-high 26 points and senior guard Nicole Garland became the all-time leader in three-point field goals made to lead the University of Southern Maine to an 86-50 win over UMass-Dartmouth in LEC women’s basketball action Saturday.
Jordan was 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-4 from three-point range to lead four players in double figures for the Huskies (24-1). She added six rebounds and four steals.
Senior forward Jordan Grant notched her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward Rebecca Knight was 4-for-5 from the field for 12 points.
Maine Maritime 58, Johnson State 38
JOHNSON, Vt. — Casey Everest and Leah Jackson combined for 31 points to help Maine Maritime to a 58-35 triumph over Johnson State in NAC women’s basketball action Saturday.
The Mariners (14-11) jumped out to an early 12-5 lead following a lay-up by Bekah Campbell. The Mariners kept the Badgers (5-20) at a safe distance putting as much as 30 points between the teams.
Lyndon State 74, Husson 70
LYNDON STATE, Vt. — Donna Lawson scored 29 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Lyndon State to a 74-70 decision over Husson University in women’s basketball action Saturday.
The second half went back and forth as the Eagles (8-16) took a 63-62 lead with 2:30 left to play. Two free throws by Lawson with 30.1 seconds remaining sealed the win for the Hornets (8-17).
Stephanie Comstock tossed a team-high 22 points, seven rebounds and two steal off the bench for the Eagles. Kelli Murray had 16 points, eight assists and three steals.
Men’s hockey
Bowdoin 2, Connecticut College 1 (OT)
BRUNSIWCK — The Bowdoin men’s ice hockey team clinched the number one seed for the NESCAC Tournament with a 2-1 overtime victory over Connecticut College.
Kyle Lockwood scored both goals for the Polar Bears (19-2-2).
Bowdoin scored with just under three minutes remaining in the opening period to lead Connecticut College 1-0. The Camels (3-12-3) evened the score coming off a late power play goal from Steve Servido to send the game into overtime.
Connecticut College pulled their goalie with a minute remaining in the extra session. With 1.8 seconds remaining, Lockwood spun around on the blue line and sent the puck straight down the center into the empty net.
Colby 6, Tufts 2
WATERVILLE — Senior co-captains Cory McGrath and Scott Harff scored a goal and an assist each as Colby earned the seventh seed in the NESCAC playoffs with a 6-2 victory over Tufts in men’s hockey action Saturday.
Nils Martin added his first goal of the season at 13:44 of the third period to close out the scoring for the Mules (7-14-3).
Goalie Sam Parker was solild in goal for Colby, making 22 saves in 54 minutes of action. Matt Delaney tended goal for the final 6:16 for Colby.
