Due to irresponsible immigration policies, the Lewiston public school system has found itself in a very difficult situation without the finances to help it run as effectively and smoothly as it has in the past.
It is a shame that the redistricting issue has caused residents to take sides on who adds more to the schools — English-speaking Americans or immigrant children. Unfortunately, that issue is stirring up some very negative criticism toward people who, at no other time, would have ever been considered bigots and snobs by even their own friends and neighbors.
The ELL students and parents are being made to think that a better education will be offered by moving them to a new school when, in reality, the same teacher or ed tech may just follow them from one school to the other.
There might be some social benefits, but since when is that the responsibility of the school department?
The question is, how does Lewiston adequately staff its schools to support the growing population of ELL students while maintaining the standard of teaching for the English-speaking, American born students?
I have attended all but two of the public forums and I can say that the side that is in opposition to adopting the redistricting plan as proposed far outweighs those who are in agreement with the plan.
On Feb. 25, it will be seen if the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
