1914 – 2013

LEWISTON — Carroll M. Taber, 98, formerly of 235 Lake St. in Auburn, died early Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, following a lingering illness, at the Russell Park Rehabilitation Center, where he had resided in recent years.

He was born in Auburn, Feb. 19, 1914, the son of Arthur L. and Della (Merrill) Taber. He was educated in Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School, Class of 1931.

For several years, he was employed by the Fred E. Young Insurance Agency in Auburn. Carroll purchased the business from Mr. Young and operated it for 20 years, retiring in 1974. He sold his business to the former Whitmore Agency in Auburn.

Mr. Taber was active in the grange, serving as master and lecturer of the Lake View Grange No. 249 as well as state and national grange. He was an honorary member of the Ancient Brothers Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons No. 178, having been a member for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Androscoggin Valley Square and Compass Club.

Carroll loved gardening as a hobby, enjoying his small greenhouse and keeping a large garden of shrubs and plants there for many years.

Mr. Taber was proud to have resided most of his life at his Lake Street residence since October of 1919, until his illness. He was also proud to have been one of the oldest members of the Auburn community.

Survivors include many cousins and good friends.
