PORTLAND — After a decade of acclaimed performances of major works including “Carmina Burana” and Mozart’s “Requiem,” The Choral Art Society and the Portland Ballet Company will join forces again at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at Merrill Auditorium to premier a contemporary work, “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace.”
The story charts the growing menace of a descent into war, interspersed with moments of reflection. It shows the horrors that war brings and concludes with the hope for peace in a new millennium, when “sorrow, pain and death can be overcome.”
Welsh composer Karl Jenkins’ composition was commissioned by the Royal Armouries in the United Kingdom for the Millennium celebrations to honor the victims of the Kosovo War. The piece incorporates texts from a variety of religious and historical sources, including the Catholic mass, the Islamic Call to Prayer, Rudyard Kipling and a survivor of Hiroshima.
This masterpiece will be presented with a live orchestra and world premiere choreography.
