OXFORD — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution endorsing a passenger rail line through the region.
The endorsement puts Oxford among other communities on the Oxford and Coos County Corridor Coalition. The board joined most towns on the route, including Paris and Bethel, where the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce has been promoting rail service through the area.
Two weeks ago, Town Manager Michael Chammings was appointed to the Western Maine Economic Development Council’s Rail Committee at the request of Council Director Glen Holmes.
If passenger rail service comes to the county, Oxford could get a rail station off Number Six Road to help connect local businesses with railroad passengers.
The board also approved mass gathering permits for the Oxford Plains Speedway’s 2013 race season.
