AMHERST, Mass. — Martin Ouellette recorded his third career shutout as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team blanked UMass 2-0 on Friday night at the Mullins Center.

Ouellette stole the show for the Black Bears, making numerous outstanding saves en route to the victory.

With the game scoreless, Ouellette made a save, robbing a UMass player on the power play. After a scoreless first period, Maine took a 1-0 lead at 14:14 of the second period.

On the power play, Ben Hutton received a pass from Devin Shore and fired a shot past UMass goalie Kevin Boyle from just inside the blueline. Jake Rutt also assisted on the goal.

Maine extended its lead to 2-0 at 18:51 of the second period when Mark Anthoine of Lewiston had his shot from the right wing beat Boyle in transition. Stu Higgins and Mike Cornell each assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.

Desmond sets record

BOSTON — Sophomore Kevin Desmond of Monmouth established a new school record in the 800 meters to highlight the University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track and field performance at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) New England Championships on Friday

Desmond eclipsed the USM indoor record in the 800 with his sixth-place time of one-minute, 51.70 seconds and will advance to the 800 finals on Saturday.

Desmond bettered the previous record time of 1:52.07 set last year by Ben Manning at the same meet.

Desmond will be among the eight finalists who will race for the regional title on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Maine 7, Stetson 1

DeLAND, Fla — Scott Heath went 4-for-5 with four RBI as the University of Maine baseball team defeated Stetson 7-1 on Friday night in DeLand, Fla. Tommy Lawrence pitched eight strong innings to earn his first win in a Maine uniform.

Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled to shortstop and then stole second base. He scored when Scott Heath singled through the right side.

The Black Bears extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the eighth inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) led off the inning with a singled up the middle and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) followed with a single to right field. Black scored the second run of the game when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on a fielder’s choice. Heath drove in his second run of the game with a single to right field, plating Balzano.
