Another weekend, another snowstorm. This one has been named Winter Storm Q by the Weather Channel and nobody seems to know why.

With 3 to 6 inches expected Saturday into Sunday, embattled Mainers may be expected to yawn at this one. Why, we recall much bigger storms with howling winds and nearly 3 feet of snow piling up in the streets. And that was two weeks ago.

Regardless, police on Friday were already announcing parking bans and businesses were mulling what has become a midwinter imbroglio: Take a snow day Sunday? Or be bold and stay open?

We might not get 3 feet this time, but weather officials are warning of the latest winter curve ball – the snow that comes overnight Saturday will mix with rain. Wet snow equals heavy snow and shoveling might not be as easy as it has been after the last few storms.

What else? Well, there’s the wind. Forecasters say it will gust up to 30 mph on Sunday as the storm pulls away late Sunday.

In Auburn, police are instituting a parking ban from 11 p.m. Saturday until early Monday morning. Again, they advise that cars parked on public streets during the storm will be towed. Lewiston plans a similar ban as do most cities and towns across the area.

The big storm two weeks ago was affectionately named Nemo by the Weather Channel, which began giving monikers to storms big enough to warrant one at the start of winter. Weather Channel officials said they expect 8 to 10 winter storms will get names each year. Most, they said, will have a Greek or Roman theme. The first of the season were Athena, Brutus and Caesar.

Last weekend, as parts of Maine got another 6 inches on a Sunday afternoon, the Weather Channel declared that storm’s name was Plato. With Q barreling toward us this weekend, it remains to be seen when the next storm will be upon us. It’s a pretty good bet, however, that its name will begin with an R.
