Hebron Academy hockey goes “Pink in the Rink”
HEBRON – Members of Hebron Academy heraldedthe return of “Pink in the Rink” this month when the young ladies of Lumberjack hockey raised funds and awareness for breast cancer at their annual “Pink Socks” game. Players sported pink uniforms and raised more than $775 in less than two days for Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Bangor. The program is running five years strong.
“I am thrilled to celebrate Hebron’s 5th year of “Pink in the Rink.”
The girls have really taken hold of the idea and run with it, and it’s
something that they look forward to every year,” remarked Hebron
Academy Varsity Girls’ Hockey Head Coach Katie Coyne. “‘Pink in the Rink’ is not only a memorable event, but it’s also a way for Hebron students to learn the invaluable lesson of service.”
The “Pink Socks” initiative has been in place at the Academy for half
a decade, originating with Hebron’s varsity girls’ hockey team,
inspired by a similar program at another school. In the campaign’s
first run, players donned only pink hockey socks, but it has taken
shape since Hebron parents generously donated pink jerseys in 2011.
Since its induction, “Pink in the Rink” has generated thousands of
dollars towards the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Bangor through
student-organized raffles, bake sales and other programs.
