BRIDGTON — Lake Region Community Theatre has announced auditions for its summer musical “Gypsy,” a Stephen Sondheim musical inspired by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and produced by arrangement with Tams-Witmark Music Library, Inc.
Auditions will take place at Stevens Brook Elementary School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 (register and be prepared to dance by 6:30 p.m.) and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 16 (register and be prepared to dance by 10:30 a.m.).
“Gypsy” is a classic American musical based on the life of an acting family in search of fame in the 1920s, during the decline of vaudeville and the rise of burlesque. Rose, an overbearing stage mother, seeks to live her dreams of stardom through her daughters. The lead role of Rose has been cast.
All of those auditioning will be expected to participate in a dance exercise, so wear appropriate clothing, including sneakers or dance shoes. If you tap dance, bring your tap shoes.
The cast includes over 40 members, from age 8 and up, both female and male. Lead roles other than that of Rose include Louise, Herbie, June and Tulsa. There are non-lead speaking roles as well. Those auditioning for these roles should plan to read from the script and prepare a song from “Gypsy” or another traditional musical that shows their vocal range. An accompanist will be present for those who bring their own sheet music. No pop songs will be accepted.
A read-through will be held on March 19. Rehearsals will begin on March 20. A typical weekly rehearsal schedule will be from 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 10 a.m.-noon Saturdays.
The show will be performed from June 21-23 and June 28-30 at Deertrees Theatre in Harrison.
