FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue RSD Franklin County Adult Education has scheduled two art classes with art instructor Barbara Hathaway, Painter of Sunsets. Acrylic Painting starts Monday, March 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Art of Watercolor starts March 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Hathaway Art Studio, 32 Maple St., Wilton. Both classes are for five weeks.
The techniques used make quick landscapes with sky, sunsets, mountains, trees, details, water and reflections. Learning why green is mixed by using other colors than blue and yellow is one technique that is taught. Hathaway shows why black made from different colors will produce a more pleasant black than using just black paint. Students can watch a demo and paint along or work at their own speed and use their own photos as inspiration.
Materials for the watercolor course are watercolor paper 140 pound, three watercolor brushes and a watercolor paint set. The paints can be liquid or hard pan.
The acrylic course requires a 16- by 20-inch canvas, acrylic paint set, three acrylic brushes and a palette, which can be a foam tray or glass dish.
Both art mediums dry quickly and clean up easily with water. Both classes are $65. Beginners to semi-pro will be able to finish a painting to mat or frame at the last session.
Hathaway is the Maine Federation of Women’s Art department chairman, certified registered teacher with the Michael Wilcox School of Colour and a member of Upcountry Artists.
