AUBURN — The William J. Rogers Post 153 of the American Legion will hold a St. Patrick’s weekend celebration. The post will be celebrating the 94th anniversary of the American Legion birthday and the 110th anniversary of St. Patrick’s Day, a celebration of American Irish culture which became an official public holiday in 1903.
The first event will be a corned beef supper, prepared by Tibby Dupuis, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16, followed by music and dancing from 7 to 11. Meal prices are $7 for adults and $4 for children under 12.
“In the United States and Canada, consumption of corned beef is often associated with St. Patrick’s Day. Corned beef is not considered an Irish national dish as some may think, and the connection with Saint Patrick’s Day specifically originates as part of Irish-American culture, and is often part of their celebrations in North America,” said Paul R. Bernard, public relations officer. “Post 153 is inviting the public to join them in celebration of Irish culture and encourages everyone attending to dress in green, shamrocks, etc.”
On Sunday, March 17, the post will host the 94th birthday of the American Legion. Breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. The menu will consist of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, baked beans, white or wheat toast and the military’s infamous S.O.S. with Army coffee and juice, plus an old Beaulieu family recipe for crepes that has been passed down for generations from Quebec and France.
The cost is $6 adults, $4 children under 12.
All money raised supports veteran programs. For information on membership, contact 1st Vice Commander Hugh Brown at 782-1118 or email [email protected] or send mail to New Auburn American Legion, William Rogers Post 153, 71 South Main St., Auburn, ME 04210.
