100 years ago, 1913
A mysterious man, not believed to be identified in any way with the “mysterious woman in black,” has been making himself conspicuous in the vicinity of Sabattus and Webster streets, lately, and has been jumping out in front of several women at various times. While no actual harm has been done, there are many who are somewhat wary of this vicinity on account of the man’s actions. Wednesday night it is reported that he jumped out in front of a woman and when she did not seem startled, he remarked, “You’re not frightened, are you,” whereupon she started off at top speed. Several who have seen the man say he is broad shouldered and wears a red sweater, a large loose top coat or sack coat, and a hat that is pulled down over the eyes. There are some who claim to know who he is.

50 years ago, 1963
It was reported in industrial circles yesterday that Raytheon Company is halting production of diodes at its sprawling semiconductor plant in Lewiston. The reports were neither confirmed nor denied by two officials of the firm. The change would affect jobs of 50 to 75 women employees and a few engineers, it is said. The Lewiston plant was not originally set up to handle the diode line, but the necessary equipment was added soon after the plant opened in 1961.

25 years ago, 1988
More than two dozen members of the Twin Cities’ business community and a number of city officials took a walking tour under the bright sunshine this morning and got a fresh look at the city’s central business district. The tour was part of a round-table discussion entitled “Downtown Lewiston: Meeting the Challenge,” sponsored by the Downtown Development and Management Corporation.
