Hetherly, of Mount Vernon, will show her recent oil paintings which explore the use of gesture and color to build expressive pieces. She paints outside her home and also from life studies in her studio. She appreciates the forgiveness and versatility of painting with oils.

From thin to thick, from brushing to scraping, from blending and wiping to careful placing, there is always another choice to be made as the painting progresses. Most recently she has been experimenting with the use of a painting knife, having discovered the richness of thick sculpted paint to form masses of color.

The knife encourages large simple forms and bold gestures and discourages detail work, resulting in the need to commit and be bold. Her subjects vary widely, from landscapes to still life to figures. She is conscious of how including abstractions and strong color strengthens her work.

The exhibit is open to the public. Slate’s is located at 167 Water Street.
