SACO — Leia Togni Brown, 97, died peacefully Monday, Feb. 25, at Seal Rock Healthcare, after a period of failing health.

Leia was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Waterville, the daughter of Pietro (Peter) Giovanni and Mary Katherine Lupini Togni, formerly of Bergamo, Italy. She was the third oldest of eight children and the first of her siblings born in the U.S. Leia was a graduate of Waterville High School and Morgan-Thomas Business College in Waterville.

On June 24, 1939, Leia married Ralph Frederick Brown and moved to Bath to raise their family. She was employed for many years with the former BIW Credit Union, (now known as Five Counties Federal Credit Union) retiring as assistant branch manager.

Upon retiring, Leia moved to Dover, N.H., where she was an active member of the Dover Women’s Club and a volunteer at the Dover Public Library. She remained in Dover until moving to Kennebunk in 2006 to be closer to family.

Survivors include her sister, Nancy Turlo of Waterville; daughter, Barbara Marshall of Summerfield, N.C.; son, R. Frederick Brown of West Hartford, Conn.; stepdaughter, Jeanette Brown of Albuquerque, N.M.; granddaughters, Stephanie Limmer and Leia Lowery of Kennebunk and Sarah Maurer of Westfield, Mass.; grandsons, Peter Wilson of Chicago, Ill., and Adam Brown of West Hartford, Conn.; and her five great-grandchildren, Marshall, Caroline and Henry Lowery and Sarah and Margo Limmer.

Leia was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Frederick Brown; her brothers, Hector and Joseph Togni; and her sisters, Rena York, Pearl Shirley, Rita Bickford and Ida Togni.
