The events of the past 11 months are, or should be, documented in the minutes of the selectmen’s meetings, which will show that the current problems have been caused by three people, namely, Selectmen Kathy Hussey, Laurieann Milligan and Tim Holland. I have been to every meeting from the beginning of this problem in April 2012, when Holland proposed his ordinance about political conflict of interest.
During that month, a people’s petition for the ordinance was approved and Holland promoted the ordinance during his campaign for re-election. However, he did not disclose pertinent information from the Maine Municipal Association about recommended wording for the ordinance.
In June, Holland was re-elected and the ordinance passed. Hussey, Milligan and Holland withheld the information from the MMA until after the vote. The resulting chaos is a result of their own actions.
We had not participated in the petitions but voted for the ordinance, based on a belief that the town officials knew what they were talking about.
Now, Peru citizens are under Holland’s control, with Hussey and Milligan backing him up.
If you look at what’s required under MRSA 30-A §2605, Holland and Hussey are receiving financial and political compensation while breaking the trust of the public on what they voted for.
Any financial liabilities brought on the town because of the situation should be paid for by the situation’s creators — Hussey, Milligan and Holland — not the townspeople who were duped to vote for something that was written for the benefit of those three, not the townspeople.
