Documentary on health care

AUBURN — At various University of Maine locations on Monday, March 4, the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging (M4A) and its partners will host free Health Care Town Hall meetings throughout Maine to preview and discuss the documentary: “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare.”

The viewing of the award-winning documentary film will be followed by discussion between health care providers and consumers regarding how to increase the quality of care while reducing the cost of health care in Maine. The goal is to find solutions that are positive, creative and bold.

The meetings are scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the following University of Maine locations: Augusta, Auburn, Machias, Orono, Portland and Presque Isle. Doors open at 5.

Girl Scouts booth sales

STATEWIDE — Girl Scouts of Maine announces that the public booth sale phase of the Girl Scout Cookie Sale will take place from March 9 to  30. This is the last chance to buy cookies until next year.

Cookies may also be purchased via the council website, www.girlscoutsofmaine.org, or by calling the Girl Scouts of Maine office at 888-922-4763, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m., to 5:30 p.m. Cookies ordered online or by phone can be shipped for an additional fee, or picked up at the Girl Scouts of Maine South Portland or Bangor Service Centers.

Cookies are $4 per box and come in eight flavors: Shortbread, Thanks-A-Lot, Peanut Butter Patties, Lemonades, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Thin Mints and the new flavor, Mango Cremes.

Free workshop on energy course

FAIRFIELD — Lawrence Adult Education will offer a free career planning workshop on Monday evenings, March 11 through April 29, to help adult students prepare for a career in the growing field of energy services.

The eight-session workshop will focus on the new Kennebec Valley Community College Energy Services and Technology program, the ?rst of its kind in Maine to offer plumbing, heating, ventilation, cooling systems, solid fuel, geothermal and solar heating in one comprehensive program.

Workshop participants will meet local employers, workers in the field and education providers while creating a plan for a career in energy services. Women and veterans are encouraged to attend.

Naturalist year-long course

FALMOUTH/HOLDEN — The Maine Master Naturalist Program is accepting applications for its Falmouth and Holden courses for 2013-14. The organizations’s goal is to develop a statewide network of volunteers to teach natural history at parks, conservation organizations, land trusts and schools throughout Maine. Upon enrollment, participants agree to volunteer 40 hours in the year following certification and must continue to volunteer to remain active Maine Master Naturalists.

Each course provides more than 66 hours of classroom and field experience focusing on ecological principles; wetland and upland ecology; identification of Maine’s flora and fauna; other aspects of Maine’s natural history; and teaching skills.

The Holden course, to be held at Fields Pond Audubon Center, will run from June 1, 2013, through June 4, 2014, with 10 evening and seven Saturday classes. Applications must be received by March 20.

The Falmouth course, at the Gilsland Farm Audubon Center, will run from June 8, 2013, through May 21, 2014, with 10 evening and six Saturday classes. Applications must be received by March 15.

Food safety for volunteer cooks

FALMOUTH — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland County will hold a Cooking for Crowds food safety training workshop for volunteer quantity cooks with Kathy Savoie, extension educator, from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, at the University of Maine Regional Learning Center, 75 Clearwater Drive, Suite 104.

The cost is $15 per person; scholarships are available.
