It has come to my attention, in a Sun Journal article Feb. 20, that the Oxford County commissioners voted for no maintenance for the Tyler Road in Mason Township.

In all of the negotiations with the commissioners before and after the county took the road from local landowners, we were promised that the road would be maintained. The drastic act of taking the road involves taking ownership and, therefore, taking responsibility.

Previously, residents made the basic repairs necessary when needed to maintain access to their properties. As they have said, the county didn’t do anything for 30 years.

The county needs to live up to its words and legal responsibilities. After all, commissioners lobbied diligently to take ownership of that road. Now, with some basic maintenance they can do the job they set up for themselves.

I would also like to state that none of the landowners were ever opposed to maintenance, the issue was ownership and management. Now that the county has legally taken responsibility, please do what was promised at the eminent domain taking, that the county would be “good stewards” of the road.
