1921 – 2013

Monmouth — Louise O. Smith, 91, a resident of Main Street in Monmouth, died Saturday, March 2, at her home in Monmouth.

She was born on July 23, 1921, in Moscow, Maine, the daughter of Parker W. and Velma M. Sizeland Otis.

Louise graduated from Monmouth Academy in 1939, Bates College in 1944 and received her Master’s Degree from Columbia University in 1957.

On Oct. 19, 1962, in Monmouth, Louise and Clement H. Smith were married.

From 1944 to 1945, Louise worked for the U.S. War Department in Washington, D.C., doing military cryptanalytics.

She worked at Rocky Hill School in Connecticut, Bucksport and Richmond high schools and from 1950 to 1976 in the Winthrop schools as a teacher and librarian, retiring in 1976. After retiring, she worked part time for Maine School Management.

Louise was a member of the United Church of Monmouth, clerk of church for 25 years, served on many church committees and taught Sunday school for 10 years. She was a past Matron of Boynton Chapter No. 88 of OES and present member of Mystic Chapter69, also DDGM from 1958 to 1960. She was also a member of the Wales Grange, Pomona State National, Maine Teacher’s Association, National Education Association, Phi Sigma Iota, Rugged Cross Shrine No, 2 and Delta Kappa Gamma.

She enjoyed traveling, bowling, golf, swimming, loved playing bridge and watching the cows in the pasture beside her home. Once a year Louise would rent a camp on a lake and take all of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews on a week long outing.

She is survived by her sister, Marion Donnell of Wales; her children and their spouses, Nancy Jean and Bob Deane, of Santa Fe, N.M., Carol Lynn Davis of Chebeague Island, David Smith, of Monmouth, and Jeremiah and Myrna Smith, of Monmouth; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Clement H. Smith; her daughter, Linda Smith Dyer; and her brother-in-law, Eddie Donnell.
