Learn to use GPS units

FARMINGTON — Franklin County Soil & Water Conservation Districts will hold a GPS training class from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 27, at the USDA Service Center, 107 Park St.

The hands-on trainer will be Patty Cormier, district forester with the Maine Forest Service.

Interested individuals must preregister by sending in or dropping off an $18 check by March 15 along with their name, mailing address, phone number and email address to Franklin County SWCD, 107 Park St., Farmington ME 04938. The fee will be $20 after that date.

Cat show, adoptable pets

AUGUSTA — A cat show this weekend at the Augusta Armory, 179 Western Ave., will include local shelters and rescues that will have many cats that need to be adopted immediately. Donations are also desperately needed to assist the shelters and rescue groups in their ongoing efforts.

The show is Friday, March 15, from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be household pets and also many other breeds of cats at the show from all over the United States.

Forum on health care funds

FARMINGTON — “Where Are Our Health Care Dollars Going and What Can We Do About It?” is the theme of a public forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at the Franklin County Hospital, 111 Franklin Health Commons, in the G. H. Bass Room.

Introductions will be given by John Sytsma, M.D., and the main speaker will be Julie Pease, a psychiatrist and president of Maine AllCare.

An expert panel will answer questions such as: Where, why and how much money are we wasting on health care, without increasing benefits or quality of care? And, what benefits can a universal, single-payer system provide for individuals, employers, hospitals and the whole economy? In addition to Pease, panel members include Sen. Geoff Gratwick, Alice Knapp and Garrett Martin, executive director of the Maine Center for Economic Policy.

Dance to the Oldies

FARMINGTON — Dance To The Oldies featuring live music of the 50s and 60s with Shepherd’s Pie will take place from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at UMF North Dining Hall.

There will be a guest appearance by Elvis, as well as refreshments, trivia contests, dance contests, 50/50 raffle, silent auction and a cash bar. Family friendly; kids and teens welcome. Dress up or down.

Price Is Right show at Spruce

JAY — The Price Is Right show will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Spruce Mountain Middle School, starring Jeff Parsons from Q97.9 Morning Radio Show.

Event benefits Paper Museum

LIVERMORE FALLS — A Cabin Fever Reliever benefit for the Paper Museum will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Murray Hall. Admission is $2 for adults and children are free.

Lots of food, vendors and therapy dogs are just a few of the things happening. Vendor tables are also available for $10; space is limited.

Harvesting around deer

MERCER — A workshop on Harvesting in Deer Wintering Areas will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 23, at 122 Corson Road. This is free and open to all; no need to pre-register.

The local chapter of the Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine will lead a walk on an active harvest with IF&W biologists Chuck Hulsey and Bob Cordes to learn about their recommendations of harvesting in a deer wintering area, or DWA.

The landowners and SWOAM members, Bob and Mary Burr, are harvesting on their woodlot, which includes a DWA. Their intent is encouraging wildlife habitat, so harvest objectives revolve around that.

Forester Peter Tracy will talk about harvest plan objectives. Prepare for the weather, and bring snowshoes if necessary.

Kindergarten enrollment

LIVERMORE — Livermore Elementary School will conduct registration for enrollment into kindergarten from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 29.

To register a child who will be 5 years old on or before Oct. 15, call the main office at 897-3355, ext. 301, to make an appointment.

Required will be the child’s birth certificate (this is not required if the child is currently attending pre-K as it would be on file) and a current immunization record. The registration process takes approximately 20 minutes.

In the event that the school has a snow day, registration will be held Friday, April 5, at the same time. There will be no kindergarten classes that day.

Wilson Lake ice out contest

WILTON — Blue birds are here. Guesses are being accepted for when the ice on Wilson Lake will be out.

Wilton Fish & Game Association member Bruce Dyke wants to remind citizens that the deadline for guessing when the ice will be out on Wilson Lake must be received by April 1.

The closest guess will receive a $100 cash prize. Entries cost $5 each and can be sent to Bruce Dyke, PO Box 605, Wilton Maine 04294. Guess must include month, day, hour, minute, as well as your name and phone number. For more information call Bruce at 645-2131.

Dyke brought the contest back from several years ago when he won a fly rod as a result of having the closest guess in 1979.

Funds from the contest will help support upgrades to the range and youth programs.

Hospice Volunteer training set

JAY — No matter who you are, you’ve got something to offer to hospice patients. Typically the needs are simple – companionship and friendship, emotional support, someone to listen – but the small things you do make an enormous difference in someone’s life.

Beacon Hospice will offer free 22 hour Hospice Volunteer Training at Spruce Mountain Adult and Community Education, 13 Community Drive, on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. from April 2 to May 21.
