The 2013 Principal’s Award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. It is presented in more than 140 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.

Award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 6.

The luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.

Gwenyth Fraser,

Oak Hill High School

WALES — Gwenyth Fraser, a senior at Oak Hill High School, is the daughter of Sheri and Paul Fraser of Litchfield.

Throughout Gwenyth’s years at Oak Hill, she has distinguished herself and has been involved in many activities. These are some of the organizations Gwenyth has been an active member of: drama, jazz band and Voices of Color (Oak Hill’s Select Choir), Academic Decathlon and the Oak Hill Legislative Assembly. Gwenyth was also inducted into the National Honor Society, has served as a member of the Civil Rights Team and is the editor of Oak Hill High School’s newspaper, Raider Chatter. She was also the schools’ representative at Dirigo Girls State.

St. Dominic Academy

AUBURN — Eric Link, a senior at St. Dominic Academy, is the son of Randy and Sarah Link of Auburn.

Principal Donald Fournier said, “Eric has continuously displayed the very best in integrity, community and excellence, three attributes that we emphasize at St. Dom’s. He is active in the National Honor Society, math team, Drama Club and Music Ministry. He is involved as an athlete on both cross country and track teams. He will be joining fellow classmates on a week-long Mission Mississippi outreach. He has consistently been a student of the highest caliber as evidenced by his numerous awards throughout his high school career. He was selected as the Exchange Club Youth of the Year, and was a recipient of the Harvard Book Prize, the Rensselaer Medal and the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award.” Fournier noted, “Eric very much deserves this recognition.”

Leavitt Area High School

TURNER — Principal Eben Shaw has announced that Sydney Nadeau of Greene, a senior at Leavitt Area High School, has been selected to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award.

“During her time here at Leavitt, Sydney has established herself as a leader in our school community. Her work as the class president over the last two years has illustrated her commitment to our school and her class,” Shaw said. “Additionally, Sydney has excelled as a student athlete as a member of our girl’s ice hockey team. Even with all of her involvement in activities outside the classroom, Sydney has maintained the highest academic standards. Sydney serves as an excellent role model for the students of our community and she is very deserving of this recognition.”

Aaron St. Pierre,

Winthrop High School

WINTHROP — Senior Aaron St. Pierre, son of Julien and Mona St. Pierre of Winthrop, has been selected as the Winthrop High School recipient.

During his four years at Winthrop High School, Aaron has maintained an excellent scholastic record while also participating in many co-curricular activities. He has distinguished himself in the classroom, on the playing field and as a student leader.

Aaron has participated in sport throughout his high school career, playing soccer, tennis, including captain in grade 11, and participating in nordic skiing, including captain in grades 11 and 12. Aaron has been a member of the Latin Club and Drama Club.

Outside of school Aaron worked with a group of volunteers and members of the nordic ski team, to build a shed/concession stand to be used by various school teams.

Aaron plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono this fall. At this time, his major is undecided.

He will attend the banquet with Principal Keith Morin.

Zachary Tannenbaum,

Edward Little High School

AUBURN — Edward Little High School’s recipient is Zachary Tannenbaum, the son of Keith and Laurie Tannenbaum.

Zachary is truly a deserving student who has taken the most rigorous academic course load possible during his years at ELHS. As a member of the Kick Off Mentor council, he has shown outstanding leadership for the school community as he helped organize and deliver a strong mentor program throughout the past two years for ninth graders.

Zachary was also honored by the LA Exchange Club as the student of the month for his outstanding service to his community and to his school. He has volunteered at the Good Shepherd Food Bank. He has received numerous academic awards including the Dennis Sweetser Chemistry Award and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Book Award, AP Scholar with Honor award. Zach was also selected as a Boy’s State representative and as a participant at the Exploring Engineering Camp at UMO.

After graduation, Zachary will be studying engineering and will be attending Dartmouth College.

Zachary will attend with assistant principal Leslie Morrill.
