STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The University of Maine baseball team defeated defending America East champion Stony Brook 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in an America East opener.
Maine improves to 10-11 on the season and 1-0 in America East play, while Stony Brook falls to 5-11, 0-1 in conference play.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Colin Gay singled to center field and then stole second base. He scored when Scott Heath hit a sacrifice fly. The run would be the lone one of the game for either team.
Maine’s Tommy Lawrence went the distance for the Black Bears on the mound. He allowed seven hits over nine innings while striking out seven. He improves to 2-2 on the season.
Wentworth splits
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology wrapped up its annual spring trip by splitting a pair of games with Franklin & Marshall. The Leopards ran their win streak to four with a 6-5 win in the first game before the Diplomats earned the sweep with a 13-2 triumph.
Both teams scored in the first inning as Franklin & Marshall got on the board first when senior Aaron Gillette led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a senior Kevin Shields groundout. Wentworth tied the game in the home half of the inning after freshman J.P. Dennehy hit a one-out double and moved to third on a groundout by sophomore Joe Hulme). He scored on a sophomore Jake Mailman single.
Wentworth took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third when sophomore Scott Ouellette of Lewiston singled in Dennehy, who had reached on an infield hit.
USM 2, Farmindale 1
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Freshman Sam Dexter notched his first collegiate hit, a two-out RBI single, to left-center field in the top of the seventh inning to score senior Anthony Pisani and propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the Farmingdale State College Rams at the Farmingdale State Baseball Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies answered with a run in the top of the second to tie it at 1-1. Senior Chris Bernard walked, stole second and scored on a two-out single by junior Matt Verrier of Norway.
Women’s hockey
BU advances
BOSTON — The No. 3 Boston University women’s ice hockey team advanced to the program’s second Frozen Four with a 5-3 victory over No. 6/7 Clarkson on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
BU (27-5-3) matched its program record for wins in a season and will face Mercyhurst in the Frozen Four on Friday night in Minneapolis, Minn. The Lakers knocked off second-seeded Cornell, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday. The Terriers defeated Mercyhurst, 4-2, in the 2011 NCAA quarterfinals at Walter Brown Arena.
This is the third NCAA tournament win in program history for BU and it moved to a perfect 2-0 at home in the NCAA tournament. The Terriers are 2-1 all-time against ECAC opponents in postseason play.
Junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin and senior Jenelle Kohanchuk each had a goal and an assist while classmate Louise Warren notched the game-winning goal in the third period. Freshman Sarah Lefortnotched two unassisted goals and junior goaltender Kerrin Sperry was spectacular for the Terriers, as she made 34 saves to earn her third career NCAA tournament win.

Softball
Rutgers 2, Maine 0
CLEARWATER, Fla. — The University of Maine softball team dropped a 2-0 decision to Rutgers at the Eddie C. Moore Complex on Saturday afternoon. EmJ Fogel and Jean Stevens each extended their hitting streaks to four-straight with single hits for the Black Bears.
The Scarlet Knights took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and second innings. Loren Williams led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run for Rutgers before Elizabeth Adams with the games second run. It would prove to be enough as the Scarlet Knights took the game 2-0.
Bates drops pair
CLERMONT, Fla. — The Bates softball team finished its season-opening trip to Florida with a 3-3 record, after dropping both of its games on Saturday: an 8-3 loss to Bethany (W.V.) College, followed by a 6-2 defeat to UMass-Boston.
Bethany (3-2) scored one run in the first, took a 3-1 lead in the fourth, and scored four more in the fifth for a commanding 7-1 lead. Bates closed the gap to 7-2 in the bottom of the fifth when senior Mary Lewis stole home plate.
Against UMass-Boston (2-0), Bates fell behind 2-0 after one but tied it up with runs in the second and third. Lewis led off the third with a bunt single, followed by a stolen base and the eventual run on Gattuso’s RBI groundout.
Men’s lacrosse
USM 16, Maine Maritime 7
GORHAM — Senior Kyle Baker scored a game-high four goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men’s lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Baker also added an assist to have a game-high five points. Senior Mark White (had two goals and two assists, and classmate Steve Ribero chipped in two goals and one assist.
Bates 7, Wesleyan 5
LEWISTON — For the third straight year, the Bates men’s lacrosse team entered its annual game against Wesleyan University as the unranked underdog against the nationally ranked Cardinals, and emerged as the victor.
Bates scored the first four goals of Saturday’s game at Garcelon Field and stayed ahead the rest of the way for a 7-5 win over 17th-ranked Cardinals (3-1, 2-1), who suffered their first defeat of the season.
Bates junior goalie Charlie Kazarian, getting his first start since the season opener, played a major factor in the Bobcats’ fortunes, making 12 saves for a .706 save percentage, ameliorating a 39-23 advantage in shots taken by Wesleyan.
St. Joe’s 6, Anna Maria 5
PORTLAND — Saint Joseph’s College (2-4, 1-0 GNAC) edged Anna Maria College (2-3, 0-1 GNAC), 6-5, in w the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s lacrosse season-opener for both teams at Deering Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
AMCATS senior midfielder Chris Summers tied the game on a pair of occasions during this spell, but Saint Joseph’s junior Andrew Hamill capped the scoring with the game-winner off a Max Meserve feed with 59 seconds remaining in regulation.
Hamilton 10, Colby 5
CLINTON, N.Y. — The Colby College men’s lacrosse team opened the season with two victories at home on Bill Alfond Field, but the road was not as kind Saturday in a 10-5 setback to Hamilton College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.
Women’s lacrosse
Bates 8, Wesleyan 7
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Sophomore Emma Getsinger scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season and fourth of the contest with just 9.7 seconds left on the clock to make an 8-7 winner of the Bates women’s lacrosse team over Wesleyan University on Saturday.
Sophomore Kathy Yannopoulos sent a perfect pass from behind the net on the right to Getsinger in front for a quick shot and the winning goal. Yannopoulos posted her eighth assist of the year, giving her a team high for assists and points with 11.
USM 12, Castleton State 10
GORHAM — Freshman Anh Nguyen snapped a 10-10 tie with her only goal of the game coming with 7:39 to play and the University of Southern Maine Huskies went on to defeat the Castleton State College Spartans 12-10 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Junior Jacki Kelly would tack on an insurance marker just over four minutes later to secure the victory.
Kelly led all scorers with five goals and one assist for six points. Senior Samantha Purcell of Durham tallied two goals and had one assist.
Women’s track
Labreck shines
ORONO — Jesse Labreck won the heptathlon in school-record fashion lead the University of Maine women’s track and field team at the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational over the weekend.
Labreck won the heptathlon with 5,129 points, which is currently the best in the NCAA East Region and broke her own school record of 4,922 points. e 800 with a time of 2:24.60.
Allison Fereshetian of Turner took third in the heptathlon with 4,493 points. Ashten Hackett of Auburn was ninth with 3,299 points.
