University of Maine art professor and painter James Linehan says he is continually amazed by the way students fail to relate their studies to the everyday world. In a vast 8- by 24-foot mural he has painted in the main building of the Central Maine Vocational Technical Institute, Linehan tried to force students to think about the effects of their studies of technology on their surroundings. The mural, called “Silva Rerum (A Forest of Things),” extends the length of the hall just beyond the receptionist’s desk.
