100 years ago, 1913
Fifty-seven students in charge of Principal Moulton and three other instructors of the Edward Little high school will leave Auburn on Friday morning for a week’s trip. Four days will be spent in Washington. Places of historic interest will be visited and guides will be at the disposal of the party. Part of the trip, from Fall river to New York, will be made by steamer.
Sunday to Wednesday, March 23 to 25, will be spent in Washington, and there will be a side trip to Mount Vernon. On Thursdays, automobiles will transfer the party from the National hotel to the union Station in season for the 7 A.M. train to Philadelphia. In New York, Friday, tickets will be provided for special sight-seeing automobile tours.
50 years ago, 1963
Fire of undetermined origin swept through the Auto Center at 767 Minot Ave., Auburn, early this morning, destroying three new cars and causing damage estimated at from $20,200 to $25,000. The spectacular blaze, flames of which swept clear across Minot Avenue at the outset, broke out about 3 a.m. and firemen arriving at the scene quickly called for help before dismounting from their vehicles. Destroyed in the fire was the entire showroom of the Volkswagen firm, as well as three adjacent offices.
25 years ago, 1988
A former fitness center will become banquet rooms for No Tomatoes Restaurant once work is complete later this spring. Blueprints have been drawn up to convert the space beneath the restaurant at Court and Main Streets into banquet facilities. The space has been empty since last year when The Body Works, a workout studio, went out of business after losing equipment in the April flood.
