MINOT — Selectmen gave Town Administrator Arlan Saunders the go-ahead Monday to proceed with work on the paving bid for this summer’s agenda.

At the March 2 town meeting, voters approved as much as $270,000 for paving several roads in the north end of town, targeting Bailey, Hersey Hill and Holbrook roads.

“I hope to have something out there within a couple of weeks,” Saunders said. “Get our bid out early, and we might get some good bids.”

Saunders noted that he recently received an email from officials at MDOT’s Local Roads Center, informing him that the town should be able to plan on receiving $67,364 from the local road assistance program, the same amount as the town received last year. It is the same amount that town meeting voters were counting on when they approved funding for this summer’s paving program.

Selectmen also directed Saunders to prepare a request for proposals to be sent to local banks interested in handling town accounts.

Selectman Dean Campbell noted that TD Bank had closed its Mechanic Falls branch office and that the firm’s second-closest branch wasn’t all that convenient. He believed there were other banks with recently opened branches on Minot Avenue that might better serve the town’s needs.

Selectmen also appointed Christina Helms as assistant town clerk/tax collector to Heidi Hersey, to serve through Jan. 31, 2014, with a six-month probationary period. They also signed a quitclaim deed, returning property to Amber Brown.

Selectman Eda Tripp reported that the town is still owed more than $200,000 in back property taxes, with 44 properties owing about $44,000 on their 2011 taxes and 138 properties owing more than $153,000 on their 2012 property taxes.

In his code enforcement officer’s report, Ken Pratt noted that another letter has been sent to the owner of a property on Lower Road which is determined to be in violation of town ordinances. The property management company responsible for those violations was also notified. He informed them that the town’s patience in the matter is not limitless, and the problem should be corrected by the end of this month.
