FARMINGTON — The Franklin County Animal Shelter recently acquired more than 70 dogs and 17 birds from a state seizure of animals.

Providing for their care has taxed supplies and employee work hours.

“We have gone from historic low numbers of animals to historic highs,” said Executive Director Heidi Jordan. “This is a large number of dogs to receive at once. We are working overtime to provide the best possible care for these animals.”

The Maine Department of Animal Welfare removed the animals from an owner’s home last week and placed them at the shelter. The department is charged with investigating concerns about the care and treatment of animals.

The animals are being housed in areas at the shelter that are not open to the public. Because they are the subject of a court case, they will not be available for adoption until that case is decided, she said.

“This is a challenging situation for the shelter staff. The animals are needy, and our hearts go out to them,” she said.

The shelter staff cannot discuss details about the animals or the origins of the dogs, even though visitors may be curious.

“Time and again, I have seen the great affection that our community has for animals,” Jordan said. “If people are able to help by donating small pet beds, Purina Dog or Puppy Chow or paper towels, we would be grateful. Monetary donations would also be appreciated.”

The shelter is open Monday through Saturday. People may call the shelter at 778-2638 for questions about donations.
