Dixfield- and Bethel-based school districts are over their usual five snow days for the year, after Tuesday’s blustery storm called off classes.
It was the sixth snow day for SAD 44, which includes Andover, Bethel, Greenwood, Newry and Woodstock.
In RSU 10, it was the seventh snow day for students from Canton, Carthage, Dixfield, Peru, Buckfield, Hartford, Sumner, Byron, Mexico, Roxbury, Rumford and Hanover.
RSU 10 held classes as usual Wednesday, while SAD 44 started two hours later.
RSU 10 Superintendent Tom Ward said the district will add seven days to the end of the school year, bringing the last day of school to June 18.
Because the graduations from the district’s high schools are June 6 for Mountain Valley in Rumford, June 7 for Dirigo in Dixfield and June 8 for Buckfield Junior-Senior, he said he would ask the state to waive two of the seven snow days so seniors would not have to return to school after graduation.
If additional snow days are required, that request will likely change.
SAD 44 Superintendent David Murphy said the board set the Telstar Regional High School graduation in Bethel for June 14, a week later than usual, so make-up days should not be a problem.
“As far as snow days go, this is the most we have had in a while,” Murphy said.
Brenda Gammon, director of the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico, said the school follows the cancellations of RSU 10 because more students are enrolled at the vocational school from Dirigo and Mountain Valley than from Telstar.
She said the snow days are making it more difficult for students to complete their required hours for certification in some programs, but the school is using every minute possible for students to get what they need.
