AUBURNDALE, Fla. — Senior Nick Grady turned in a career day going 6-for-6 at the plate with three RBI, one run scored and a team-high three stolen bases to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team past the Trinity College (Conn.) Bantams, 16-10, at Lake Myrtle Park on Thursday afternoon.

The win was the 800th of veteran Southern Maine head coach Ed Flaherty’s career, making him the 13th coach in NCAA Division III history to reach that milestone. Flaherty’s overall career record now stands at 800-370-4 over 28 season at the helm of the Huskies.

Grady led the Huskies’ 18-hit attack with six singles. Senior John Carey, rookie Sam Dexter, senior Tucker White and junior Matt Verrier of Norway each had two hits. Carey, Dexter and freshman Nick DiBiase each had two RBI. Southern Maine also stole 11 bases on the day.

Softball

USM drops two

GORHAM — The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team opened its 2013 season with a pair of losses falling to the Elmhurst College Bluejays 14-0 in five innings and the Wesleyan University (Conn.) Cardinals 8-1 Thursday morning in Clermont, Fla.

In the opener, Elmhurst jumped on top of the Huskies exploding for 13 first-inning run en route to the 14-0 win. The Bluejays used seven hits, five walks and exploited three Huskies’ field errors for their bloated first-inning run total.

In the second game, junior Alex Sarkowsky was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in to lead the Cardinals to an 8-1 win.

The Huskies scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the third as sophomore Kristen Duross singled in senior Jessica Hayden. Wesleyan junior Laura Getchell of Gray-New Gloucester earned the win in relief.

Women’s lacrosse

Colby 16, Endicott 4

WATERVILLE — Two-time All-American Kate Pistel had three goals, one assist, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers as the sixth-ranked Colby College women’s lacrosse team got ready for its spring trip with a 16-4 non-conference victory over Endicott College at Bill Alfond Field on Thursday.

Colby led 7-1 at halftime, but the first 30 minutes were closer than the score indicates. Mule goalie Michelle Burt made five saves in the opening half, many coming on shots by Endicott from right in front of the goal.

Men’s lacrosse

USM 8, Mt. Ida 5

PORTLAND — Senior Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) scored a game-high four goals and classmate Ryan Hatch stopped 10 shots as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Mount Ida College Mustangs 8-5 in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game Thursday night at Memorial Field.

Baker scored all his goals in the first half as the Huskies built a 6-3 lead. Senior Kayle Hamilton had a pair of goals in the fourth quarter to give the Huskies some breathing room.

St. Joe’s 5, Emmanuel 4

PORTLAND — Saint Joseph’s College (3-4, 2-0 GNAC) surged past Emmanuel College (2-4, 0-1 GNAC), 5-4, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s lacrosse contest at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Thursday evening.

Emmanuel freshman Kaile MacLean-Daley put the visitors on top with the game’s first two goals, the latter coming at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter.

Saint Joseph’s rallied with four unanswered markers, including three from sophomore attackman Andrew Sullivan, to secure a 4-2 advantage.

and withstood the Saints’ late scoring push to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
