FARMINGTON — State prosecutors will not prosecute two 19-year-old college students who were arrested on charges of furnishing a place for minors to consume alcohol on March 9, Assistant District Attorney Josh Robbins said Friday.

The facts and circumstances surrounding the case against Emily A. Marron, 19, of Auburn and Molly J. Reed, 19, of Lebanon, N.H., are that this is a not a typical case to provide a place for minors to consume alcohol, he said.

University of Maine at Farmington police arrested the two on March 9 in their dormitory room at Scott Hall at the University of Maine at Farmington. Police responded to the dormitory after a complaint of loud noise was received.

There were several students and one non-student age 19 drinking in the dorm room, UMF police Chief Edward Blais previously said.

There is another system in place at the university, the Student Life Department, Blais said Monday, speaking in general.

If a student violates a student code, they are referred to that department.

There are penalties within the school, he said. Sometimes that hurts worse, he said.

“This has brought how we deal with alcohol to the forefront,” Blais said.

He and a group of others are working to make sure students are treated fairly, with one not getting a worse punishment than another, he said.

It remains illegal to provide a place for minors to consume alcohol, Robbins said.

It is still an arrestable offense.

“Our office is still dedicated and committed to prosecuting and dealing with cases when someone provides a place for minors to drink alcohol,” Robbins said. “We will also use all of the tools that are available” to handle cases on a case-by-case basis.
