“Don’t condemn the open air meetings.” Again and again in the course of his Wednesday evening address in Pine Street Congregational Church, Lewiston, Col. Gifford of Boston urged people to be slow in their criticism of the Salvation Army street corner service, and he told them why. “It was one of the biggest and best Salvation Army meetings ever held in Lewiston. Representatives of Lewiston municipal government and local civic organizations today wrangled hot and heavy before the Municipal Affairs Committee of the 101st Legislature as the committee heard proposed measures which would give Lewiston a “council-manager” form of government. Tempers ran hot as proponents of the bill presented to the Legislature by Rep. Frank Bussiere (D) of Lewiston heaped ridicule on the present officers of the municipal government. Couture, and George Call, all aldermen; and former legislator-alderman-mayor Ernest Malenfant.
