Pedestrians on Main street, Lewiston, were delayed Saturday afternoon when five barrels were rolled off a truck team and across the sidewalk through a green curtained doorway. “Thought Maine was going to be dry after Haines was elected,” said a bystander who was watching the performance.

50 years ago, 1963
Gasoline prices in Auburn continued downward yesterday with new signs appearing on Turner and Center streets. However, the lowest posted price noticed for regular grade gasoline still is that at the filling station near the South Bridge on Cedar Street, Lewiston. A drop of one cent a gallon for special grade motor fuel went into effect yesterday at a Center Street station long regarded as a price leader. Here the new price for this grade of gasoline now is 24.9 cents, with regular grade gasoline still selling for 26.9 cents. On Minot avenue, Auburn, there is a posted price of 25.9 cents a gallon for regular grade gas.

Lewiston Ward 1 Councilor Paul J. Poliquin is inviting volunteers to participate in a new version of the popular local Franco-American Festival, starting with an organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Multi-Purpose Center. “Any citizen in Lewiston or Auburn is welcome to attend this meeting, Poliquin said. Once organized, the committee will meet on a weekly basis until the festival takes place in July.
