WINSLOW — Raymond Philip Jones, 68, of Winslow, passed away unexpectedly on March 18, at his home.

Raymond was born in Rumford, Jan. 3, 1945, the son of Winfield Gould Jones and Helen Voter Jones. Raymond was a graduate of Mexico High School, Class of 1963, and the University of Maine, where he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. Following college, he was drafted into the Army and served as a security guard for the United Nations at the Joint Security Area at Panmunjom, Korea.

While in Korea, Raymond met Om Ok Son (Soonhe) who had spent her early life north of the 38th parallel. On Jan. 15, 1970, he and Soonhe married in Seoul, Korea.

After he served his time in the Army, he and his wife returned to Maine and Raymond taught at Mexico High School for a year. He and his wife moved to Winslow several years later and he spent most of his time, until retirement, three years ago, programming computers for the State of Maine, Department of Human Services.

In the past few years, Raymond was working on an autobiographical book which he named 4 KM. He was very proud of his book and lived to see it published last year.

Korea, the history and the people, was something in which Raymond was very interested. He read all he could find on Korea’s history and often commented that he probably knew more about Korea’s history then the Koreans themselves.

Raymond was extremely proud to be one of the few selected to serve at the DMZ. He was always pleased when he met another veteran that served there also. He established a web site for JSA members and maintaining this web site site was one of his joys. He also had a large collection of JSA memorabilia.

Another joy of his was when he established a tour of Korea and guided those who went on the tour, along with his friend, Anne Lee. He enjoyed the two tours and met some wonderful people who later became good friends. Raymond was hoping to be able to take another group to tour Korea in 2014, but his health did not permit it.

Another joy of his life were the daily sessions he had tutoring Anne Lee on Skype. He was very involved in her pursuing a college degree and looked forward to the day she graduated.

Surviving are his sisters and husbands, Janice and Robert Hall of Standish and Linda and Ronald Burke of Winthrop; his nieces and husbands, Brenda Hall and Bret Overturf and Andrea and Michael DeSimone; his great-nephew, Kaj Overturf; great-nieces, Tuuli and Maija Overturf and Sydney and Emily DeSimone; and his very special friend, Lee Jom Ju (Anne Lee) of Seoul, Korea.

Raymond was predeceased by his wife; and his parents.
