PORTLAND — The Goo Goo Dolls will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the State Theatre. After more than two decades as a band, with nine albums, a catalog of songs that have become ingrained in the pop consciousness and countless concerts for millions of fans, the Goo Goo Dolls are feeling particularly good about their new album: Magnetic.
“This album was really upbeat and fun,” said John Rzeznik, the trio’s primary singer, songwriter and guitarist since it was founded in Buffalo in 1986. “I don’t think we’ve made a record like this in a while. Just had a great time doing it.”
It was in 1998 that the Goo Goo Dolls proved that they were not destined to be a “one hit wonder.” In that year Rzeznik penned “Iris,” which originally appeared on the City Of Angels soundtrack, and was also included on the band’s sixth album Dizzy Up The Girl. “Iris” spent almost a year on the Billboard charts, including a phenomenal 18 weeks at No. 1.
The band has continued to build momentum. The year 2002 saw the release of Gutterflower, which included such hits as “Here Is Gone” and “Sympathy.” In 2004 a live DVD was released featuring an incredible July 4th show performed in the band’s hometown. Let Love In was released in 2006, and featured “Better Days” and a chart-topping cover of Supertramp’s “Give A Little Bit.”
The State Theatre is at 609 Congress St. Tickets, $35 in advance / $40 day of show, all ages, can be purchased at the Cumberland County Civic Center box office, by phone at 800-745-3000 and online at www.statetheatreportland.com.
