POLAND — The man who was rescued from the ice and water of Thompson Lake on Sunday night is back home.

According to John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service, Robert “Lucky” Coutts, 75, of Poland had been ice fishing on the lake past dark when he attempted to make his way back across the ice.

Poland fire Chief Mark Bosse said Coutts was about 1,500 feet out on the ice when he tripped on a pressure ridge and wedged himself in the ice and water.

Camp Fernwood caretaker Greg Varney said he knew Coutts was fishing and had seen him walking on the ice while out on his snowmobile. Varney returned to the area about five to 10 minutes later to discover Coutts had wedged his leg and arm in the ice and called 911.

After rescue crews from Poland and Oxford worked to free Coutts, he was transferred onto a Maine Warden Service airboat and taken ashore, where he was flown via LifeFlight to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

Coutts was treated and released.

“He’s fine now,” Varney said. “He came to get his truck yesterday.”
