DURHAM — Three people are running for two spots on the Board of Selectmen in Friday’s municipal election.
Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 5 at the Community School.
Deborah Larrabee and Jeffrey Wakeman are seeking re-election to the board and Benjamin Love is also vying for a seat.
Larabee, 48, lives on Hallowell Road and is seeking her second three-year term. A Durham native, her family has been involved in local politics for three generations, beginning with her grandfather, Harlie Brown, who served as town treasurer and tax collector for 40 years. Her father, Reginald Brown, was fire chief for many years, and her husband, Clifton, served as road commissioner, as did his father “Charlie” before him. Larabee said she will work toward ensuring that the town’s tax dollars are spent wisely.
Wakeman, 39, is seeking his second term. A Durham native, he’s the son of John Wakeman, who was also active in town affairs over the years. He lives with his wife on Newell Brook Road. He said he enjoyed his first term and hopes to continue working on behalf of his constituents.
Love, 33, resides off Peter Vier Road with his wife and two children. The Portland native has lived here for six years, been very active in the local athletic boosters club, and looking for an opportunity to become more involved in town affairs. He is also interested in being a write-in candidate for the Budget Committee.
Kevin Nadeau, 48, of Quaker Meetinghouse Road, is the only candidate for the Budget Committee, which has three openings. He is married and the father of two children. A native of Bangor, he has lived in town since 1999 and served as chairman of the Education Exploration Committee.
Budget Committee members Allan Purinton, William Morrill and Donald Thorne are not seeking re-election, so open seats will be filled by write-in votes.
Michelle Ritcheson, 36, of Patriot Way, is running unopposed for a three-year seat on the RSU 5 Board of Directors.
Jane Blais is not seeking re-election.
Ritcheson said she became interested in serving on the school board after her tenure on the Education Exploration Committee. She and her husband lived in West Bath before building their home here eight years ago. They have two children. Ritcheson is a commercial loan officer for Bangor Savings Bank.
The ballot is shorter this year because the positions of tax collector and treasurer are now appointed. Pauline Paradis, who has held those positions for the last 25 years, has retired and moved to Poland.
