LEWISTON — A Blake Street man remained jailed Thursday, charged with attacking his estranged wife with a knife outside their apartment.

Police charged Deng Mirac, 42, of 158 Blake St. with elevated aggravated assault and violating condition of release. He is accused of attacking Adut Adong, 34, of that address, shortly after midnight.

Adong was examined for her injuries — she was slashed in the face, police said — but was not admitted to the hospital.

Police said Mirac had been arrested in October and charged with domestic violence assault against Adong. He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail where he was being held without bail Thursday night.

The drama began at about 12:15 a.m. when a woman called police and said a man had just killed his wife in the driveway next to their home.

Adong told police Mirac had tried to stab her in the stomach, but she was wearing a thick coat that provided protection.

Police who responded were told the suspect was last seen running up Blake Street, wearing a suit and carrying a knife. Officers fanned out across the area, learning more about the suspected attacker as they went.

At about 12:30 a.m., an officer reported spotting a man who fit the description of the suspect on Elm Street, near the intersection at Main Street. Several officers responded and Mirac was taken into custody.
