AUGUSTA (AP) — Investigators say a man accused of setting a fire that destroyed the Augusta apartment building he lived in “had no apparent reason” for starting the blaze.

Stephen Cormier is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Friday on an arson charge. He was arrested Thursday.

The 57-year-old Cormier is being held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.

Investigators say the fire started when Cormier set light to a pile of papers on an end table that spread to a couch. The blaze eventually spread and the four-unit building has since been torn down. No one was hurt.

The Kennebec Journal reported that Cormier said he was not angry, upset or depressed.

Cormier had mental health issues and his roommate said he had not been taking his medication.
