Former Republican U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe told CNN that she no longer supports the Defense of Marriage Act.
She voted for the federal law that bans same sex marriage in 1996.
“I think obviously this has evolved over time on the whole issue for the whole country and the nations,” Snowe told CNN. “We’ve seen a sea change in society’s whole attitude on this particular issue and it’s only natural for government to be responsive to those changes.”
Snowe said she supports Maine’s same-sex marriage law. She said she no longer believes DOMA should be law.
The U.S. Supreme Court is considering the constitutionality of DOMA.
