Increasing the state minimum wage is not the answer to solving Maine’s economic problems. As a small business owner. I can see how this could actually do the opposite and increase the economic hardship in the state.

Increasing the minimum wage will also increase the cost of goods and services in Maine. For example, I own an early learning child care center. If the minimum wage increases, I will then have to pass this cost on to the parents utilizing my business by increasing their enrollment fees. If I don’t, I would not be able to cover my operating cost and would then have to close my doors instead of growing my business that would increase the number of jobs in the area.

That would hold true for many Maine small businesses that support this state’s economy.

Small businesses are already struggling to stay afloat in this state, what with the new federal health care program that will be in effect, plus workmen’s compensation and payroll taxes.

Isn’t Maine supposed to be “Open for Business?”
